Introduction

Higher Education Certificate Programme provides an opportunity for students who performed dismally at UACE, those who do not have appropriate qualifications based on current National admission criteria and those with foreign qualifications but do not merit admission to programmes at higher institutions of learning in Ugandan Education system.

The HEC programme is a one academic year (structured as a two-semester) lasting no less than 34 weeks in total, including examinations period. 

Programme Objectives

  1. Provide participants with the additional academic knowledge, skills, social and emotional skills and aptitudes to enable them to succeed to higher levels of education.
  2. Build relationships with academic tutors and student support structures to mentor the students for successful completion of studies in higher institution
  3. Offer a qualifications’ recognition pathway for students who previously did not measure up to the cut-off points for admission into higher education degree or diploma programmes to enter a higher education system to undertake specific programmes that merit their enhanced academic competence.

Target groups

    1. UACE Holders
    2. Foreign Qualification (Students whose foreign secondary school qualifications are not considered equivalent to UACE but permit admission into Higher Education in the foreign country)
    3. Vocational Qualifications

The HEC programme is designed to be one academic year (structured as a two-semester) lasting no less than 34 weeks in total, including examinations period. It is expected that by end of thistime the candidates will have attained the required minimum requirements for admission to the desired undergraduate degree or diploma Programme. During the one academic year (two semesters) minimum number of credit units required is 40.

UACE Holders
A candidate must have; Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education in Chemistry and Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, Physics and Mathematics or Economics and Entrepreneurship with at least two subsidiary passes or its equivalent obtained at the same sitting. At least one of the subsidiary passes shall be from a principal subject. For avoidance of doubt, a holder of UACE with only one principal pass shall be deemed to meet the admission requirements.

Vocational Qualification
Vocational Qualifications at level 2 or level 3 of the Uganda Vocational Qualifications Framework.

Foreign Qualification
Students whose foreign secondary school qualifications are not considered equivalent to UACE but permit admission into Higher Education in the foreign country. Such students shall have passed at least five subjects with a minimum overall grade of C (equivalently to Ugandan grade 5).

In addition, foreign students whose studies were not conducted in English shall show proof of proficiency in the English Language. The English proficiency centers shall be those accredited by NCHE.

Applicants or candidates’ competence may be tested through offering selection aptitude tests.

At the successful completion of this programme the student will able to;

    1. Demonstrate competency to appropriately apply the fundamentals of chemistry and Biology, Chemistry and mathematics, and Physics and Mathematics to explain phenomena in a clear and organized manner.
    2. Make judicious use of practical skills of manipulation, measurement and observation, presentation of data, observations, analysis, drawing conclusions and evaluation.
    3. Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of specific skills including practical skills, mathematical skills, writing skills, time management, critical thinking, and independent learning appropriate for successful progression to a desired or given tertiary programme.
    4. Demonstrate intellectual skills such as the ability to distinguish, combine, classify, analyze, and quantify 11 objects, events, and symbols for academic purposes both in speech and writing.
    5. Transfer Skills such as the ability to access and utilize a range of primary and secondary information sources to extend academic understanding.
    6. Be able to communicate effectively including the use of information and communication technologies.

Tuition fees for privately sponsored students shall be 550 USD per semester. All students are required to pay other functional and non-functional fees as may be defined on admission.
