Introduction

The Bachelor of Nursing Science programme philosophy at KCU is to emphasize critical thinking, advocacy, promote disease awareness, good health practice and research. It will support strong family values in the community and the world at large.

The graduate nurse will be able to apply personal experience and contribute to client recovery and wellness, which in turn strengthens the nurse’s commitment to the profession. They will be responsible to provide safe, holistic, patient centered and individualized care with social justice

This curriculum reflects the International Council of Nurses (ICN) views on nurse education and nursing; meet the accepted standards of nursing practice as set down by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council. Related concepts emphasized in the nursing curriculum include evidence-based care, research, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, effective communication, leadership, and management skills.

Programme Objectives

By the end of the BNS training programme, graduates should be able to;

  1. Discuss patient-centered care, which represents the patients’ preferences, values, and needs within the context of their families, communities and the health care delivery system.
  2. Apply critical thinking and innovation to address professional practice and patient care issues.
  3. Discuss leadership and management skills and act as a change agent within the political, social, and health care systems in the practice of nursing.
  4. Discuss scientific evidence with clinical judgement and patient preference to improve patient outcomes
  5. Identify information technology to improve patient management and care.

Target groups

    1. Diploma Holders
    2. Transfer from other training Institutions.

BNS Completion Programme shall take a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years.

This programme will follow a semester system. Each semester will be 17 weeks (15 weeks of teaching and two (2) weeks of examinations). Therefore, the duration of the Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS) Completion programme shall be equivalent to six (6) semesters.

By the end of the training, graduate nurses shall be eligible for registration by the professional Nursing Councils of their countries.

Diploma Holders
National students

  1. A candidate must possess a diploma in nursing or midwifery or both.
  2. Present a valid practicing license from the Professional Council of the home country.
  3. The institution from which such a qualification was obtained, must be recognized by the Ministry of Education and Sports.
  4. Must present satisfied copies of academic documents from their previous school/ Institutions.

Transfer from other training Institutions 

  1. The candidate must spend a minimum of 60% of the training time at KCU.
  2. Prior to admission on BNS Completion program, each candidate shall produce the relevant academic documents before he/she is considered.
  3. A recommendation from the previous Institution he/she is transferring from.

International Applicants

  1. Must present certified copies of academic documents from their previous school/ Institutions, which are equated by Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB).
  2. Present a valid practicing license from the Professional Council of the home country.

  3. Students speaking other international languages be able to understand, speak and write in English.

At the completion of the BNS training programme, graduates should be able to;

    1. Provide patient-centered care, which represents the patients’ preferences, values, and needs within the context of their families, communities and the health care delivery system
    2. Apply critical thinking and innovation to address professional practice and patient care issues.
    3. Demonstrate leadership and management skills and act as a change agent within the political, social, and health care systems in the practice of nursing.
    4. Integrate scientific evidence with clinical judgement and patient preference to improve patient outcomes
    5. Safely use information technology to improve patient management and care.

Tuition fees for privately sponsored students shall be 800 USD per semester. All students are required to pay other functional and non-functional fees as may be defined on admission.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The BNS Completion Curriculum is organized into courses taught in Six (6) semesters over a period of three years. The credit unit of each course depicts allocation of time to various curricula activities. The activities and their symbols are as follows: Skills laboratory activities, practical and clinical exposure are shown as Practical Hours (PHs); Overview lectures and seminars are shown as Lecture Hours (LHs), Tutorial sessions are shown as Tutorial hours (THs); the total Contact Hours for each course are shown as CH; and Nursing as NSG
